Ear
candling is an ancient technique that has been used for
earaches, sinus, sore throat, swimmer's ear, some chronic
headaches, allergies, hearing difficulties, some balance
problems, etc.
What
Can I Expect?
You are positioned on a
table, on your side with your head on a pillow. A cone
shaped cloth tube that has been dipped in wax and hardened
is placed in your ear, just inside the opening. The
wide end of the 'candle' is lit and the smoke from the
candle drifts down the cone into the ear canal, warming the
ear wax.
How
Does It Work?
As the ear's wax softens,
the cone shape of the candle causes a slight suction that
draws the wax into the candle. Sometimes it takes
several candles per ear to complete a session.
Various Techniques
Many therapists warm the ears
before using the candles. Others use ear drops to
loosen the wax. It is necessary to inform your
therapist if you've used some sort of drops before the
session, and also of any medical conditions the therapist
should be aware of.
I have found that after airflights,
some people cannot clear their ears, this technique has been
known to help. People who use hearing aids have found that wax
builds up faster since the aids tend to irritate the
canal. Our clients have reported this technique helps
with this also.
There are certain
contraindications that may make it unwise to use the ear
candles. Infections, bleeding, extreme pain are just a few
examples and require a doctor's attention.
